Because of its spontaneity, CSU can be challenging to diagnose and can drastically reduce an affected individual’s quality of life. The incidence of PPD may have grown during the COVID-19 pandemic, and peripartum mental health conditions are among the most common cause of preventable pregnancy-related deaths. This article discusses diagnostic criteria and tools for diagnosing PPD, differential diagnoses to consider when treating patients with PPD, and common barriers clinicians and patients face when obtaining a PPD diagnosis.
