Chlorpromazine Indications

Indications

Nausea and vomiting.

Chlorpromazine Dosage and Administration

Adult

10–25mg every 4–6hrs as needed.

Children

<6months: not recommended. ≥6months: 0.25mg/lb every 4–6hrs.

Chlorpromazine Contraindications

Contraindications

Coma. CNS or bone marrow depression. Reye's syndrome.

Warnings/Precautions

Discontinue 48 hrs before to 24 hrs after myelography. Cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, or liver disease. Epilepsy. Glaucoma. History of breast cancer. Exposure to extreme heat or organophosphates. Asthma (inj). Monitor blood, liver, and ocular function. Elderly. Pregnancy, nursing mothers: not recommended.

Interactions

Potentiates phenytoin, alcohol, other CNS depressants, propranolol. Potentiated by propranolol. Antagonized by anticholinergics. Atropine. Decreased guanethidine, anticoagulant effects.

Chlorpromazine Adverse Reactions

Adverse Reactions

Tardive dyskinesia, drowsiness, jaundice, blood dyscrasias, hypotension, retinopathy, may mask emetic signs of disease, lowered seizure threshold, rash, skin pigmentation, anticholinergic effects, insomnia, extrapyramidal reactions, neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Chlorpromazine Indications

Indications

Psychosis. Mania. Intractable hiccups. Severe childhood behavior problems. Tetany.

Chlorpromazine Dosage and Administration

Adult

Psychosis: initially 10mg 3–4 (or 25mg 2–3) times daily; may increase semiweekly by 25–50mg daily. Hiccups: 25–50mg 3–4 times daily. Severe psychosis: initially 25mg 3 times daily; may increase semiweekly by 20–50mg/day.

Children

<6months: not recommended. ≥6months: initially 0.25mg/lb every 4–6hrs as needed.
