Indications

Adjunct in severe acne.

Vibramycin Syrup Dosage and Administration

Adult

Take with fluids. 100mg every 12hrs for 1 day, then 100mg/day in 1–2 divided doses. Reduce dose after improvement.

Warnings/Precautions

Children ≤8yrs: weigh benefits vs. risks; reserve use only for severe or life-threatening conditions (eg, anthrax, Rocky Mountain spotted fever) when no alternative therapies exist. Discontinue if skin erythema, superinfection develops. Overweight women. History of intracranial hypertension. Monitor for visual disturbances. Avoid sunlight or UV light. Asthma (syrup). Monitor blood, renal, and hepatic function in long-term use. Labor & delivery. Pregnancy. Nursing mothers: not recommended.

Interactions

Antacids, iron, calcium, magnesium, bismuth subsalicylate reduce absorption. Avoid concomitant penicillins, methoxyflurane, isotretinoin. May be antagonized by barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin. Monitor prothrombin time with oral anticoagulants. May antagonize oral contraceptives. May interfere with fluorometric detection of urinary catecholamines.

Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dysphagia, enterocolitis, pancreatitis, skin rashes (may be severe), photosensitivity, urticaria, blood dyscrasias; intracranial hypertension, C.difficile-associated diarrhea.

Vibramycin Syrup Indications

Indications

Tetracycline-susceptible infections including respiratory, genitourinary, rickettsial, trachoma, specific bacterial (eg, relapsing fever). Alternative for selected infections when penicillin is contraindicated. Anthrax including inhalational anthrax (postexposure).

Vibramycin Syrup Dosage and Administration

Adult

Take with fluids. 100mg every 12hrs for 1 day; then 100mg daily; if severe: 100mg every 12hrs. Streptococcal infections: continue for 10 days. Uncomplicated urethral, endocervical, or rectal: 100mg twice daily for 7 days. Uncomplicated gonococcal: 100mg twice daily for 7 days or as an alternative single visit dose: 300mg stat, followed in one hr by a second 300mg dose. Nongonococcal urethritis: 100mg twice daily for 7 days. Early syphilis: (allergic to penicillin): 100mg twice daily for 2 weeks; syphilis >1 year's duration: treat for 4 weeks. Acute epididymo-orchitis: 100mg twice daily for at least 10 days. Postexposure inhalational anthrax: 100mg twice daily for 60 days (start as soon as possible after exposure).

Children

≤8yrs: not usually recommended. >8yrs: Severe/life-threatening infections: (<45kg): 2.2mg/kg every 12hrs; (≥45kg): give adult dose. Less severe infections: (<45kg): 4.4mg/kg in 2 divided doses for 1 day, then 2.2mg/kg in 1–2 divided doses; (≥45kg): give adult dose. Postexposure inhalational anthrax: (<45kg): 2.2mg/kg twice daily for 60 days; (≥45kg): give adult dose.

Adult

Take with fluids. 100mg daily; begin 1–2 days before, continue during and 4 weeks after travel to malarious area.

Children

≤8yrs: not recommended. >8yrs: 2mg/kg daily; max 100mg daily; begin 1–2 days before, continue during and 4 weeks after travel to malarious area.
